History
The name Devon House comes from its original owner, *George Stiebel*, who was a prominent Jamaican businessman of mixed European and African ancestry. Stiebel made his fortune through investments in the real estate and shipping industries during the 19th century, especially after making a successful fortune from gold mining in South America.
He named the property Devon House after his father’s estate in *Devon, England*. Stiebel, who was born in Jamaica, had a strong connection to his British heritage, and so naming the mansion after a place associated with his father was a meaningful personal choice.
The mansion, completed in 1881, was designed in the Georgian style, which was popular at the time, and it was considered one of the grandest homes in Jamaica. As a self-made millionaire and a symbol of the possibilities of social mobility in post-emancipation Jamaica, Stiebel, built the house not only to showcase his wealth but also as a statement of his status and success.
After Stiebel's death in 1896, Devon House changed hands a few times but eventually became a historic site. It’s now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kingston, preserving a piece of Jamaica's rich history and offering a glimpse into the island’s colonial past.
