The Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS) stands as a beacon of hope and strength in the nation’s ongoing fight against cancer. Established in 1955, the Society is a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to the prevention and control of cancer in all its forms. For decades, the JCS has worked tirelessly to educate, screen, support, and advocate for Jamaicans affected by this life-altering disease.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the mission of the Jamaica Cancer Society takes on an even greater sense of urgency and visibility. Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among Jamaican women. Early detection saves lives, and JCS is committed to making that a reality for every woman across the island.
Through nationwide outreach and screening initiatives, the Society brings critical services directly to communities. The JCS Mobile Screening Units travel to urban and rural areas alike, offering clinical breast examinations, mammograms, and Pap smears to women who might otherwise not have access to such services. These efforts are backed by a passionate team of healthcare professionals and volunteers who understand the power of early diagnosis in saving lives.
Education forms the cornerstone of the Society’s work. Throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month, JCS intensifies its public education campaigns, delivering accurate and timely information through schools, workplaces, churches, media outlets, and community groups. These campaigns empower individuals to know the signs, understand the risks, and seek timely care. They also help to dispel myths, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations around breast health.
Together, with education, early action, and compassion, the Jamaica Cancer Society continues to lead the charge in reducing the impact of breast cancer across the island.
Services
Support for patients and families affected by cancer is a critical part of the JCS mission. The Society offers counselling, patient navigation, and referral services, helping individuals manage the emotional, financial, and physical challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis. By building partnerships with hospitals, clinics, and other NGOs, the JCS creates a network of care designed to uplift and assist every step of the way.
Advocacy is another key pillar of the Jamaica Cancer Society’s work. The organization actively collaborates with local and international partners to improve access to affordable cancer care, including screenings, diagnostic testing, and treatment options. The Society plays a critical role in influencing policy decisions that can impact cancer outcomes, working to ensure that prevention and treatment remain national health priorities.
Campaigns
The Jamaica Cancer Society also operates several fundraising and awareness campaigns throughout the year, including the iconic Relay for Life, Pink Runs, and JCS Hope Events, many of which see an incredible outpouring of support from the public, private sector, and survivor community. These initiatives not only raise essential funds for cancer services but also foster a sense of unity, strength, and shared purpose.
As Breast Cancer Awareness Month continues to shine a spotlight on the importance of early detection and comprehensive care, the Jamaica Cancer Society invites everyone, women, men, families, and businesses, to join in the fight. Every donation, every screening, every conversation helps to build a stronger, healthier Jamaica.
